First School May Day Picnic Celebration
Our First School children have been learning about May Day to support the whole school topic of festivals. We enjoyed many fun and exciting activities all week during our Integrated Sessions and also during our class times. We watched some clips of May pole festivals and throughout the week we had fun using twirling ribbons as part of dance and movement.
All the children in First School celebrated the end of our May Day Week by coming together for a picnic on the play-top. We were treated to a special performance by the teachers while we ate our cookies we made during the week in our school kitchen. Children were then invited to have a go at dancing around our very own Maypole.
May Day on May 1 is an ancient Northern Hemisphere spring festival and usually a public holiday; spring holiday in many cultures. Dances, singing, and cake are usually part of the celebrations that the day includes.
