We promise: Independent, confident, lifelong learners

Help your child at home

All the fun activities that you do with your child at home are important in supporting their learning and development and have a long lasting effect on your child’s learning as they progress through school. Within Firefly, on this website and in SMARTS Homework, teachers post announcements, news, homework and useful links to support children and parents at home. To promote learning, we commit to forming successful partnerships with all our parents.

We recommend audible.com

Have your favourite books with you wherever you go!

You can sign up to Audible and take the 30-day free trial…

This online library has 1000’s of audiobooks that you can purchase and listen to. Many children and staff at Samakee are signed up to this worthwhile programme. It gives you the opportunity to access new and your favourite books at the touch of a button. It is an excellent way to develop your comprehension, vocabulary and grammar skills as well as foster self-motivation for reading independently.

These are just some of the reasons why audible is an invaluable resource for you:

  • Part of the fun of listening to a story is the wonder and magic the reader brings to the performance. Stories come to life when read aloud, and as listeners, we can see the characters and situations in new ways. You can describe fluency all you want, but nothing illustrates the concept more vividly than the animation a professional narrator brings to an audio recording…(http://www.weareteachers.com)
  • Listening to an audiobook as a family can be a powerful shared experience, especially for students who don’t necessarily come from a print-rich environment. The recording can serve as a model for reading aloud for parents and offer opportunities for discussion and reflection as family…(http://www.weareteachers.com)
  • There is now an increased emphasis on nonfiction in the curriculum and Audible is a great way to spark an interest in reading non-fiction material, for example, biographies, Science and History…(http://www.weareteachers.com)

The App is easy to use:

Have you ever…

read a book cover to cover? “Of course” you answer… After you finished, did you experience a feeling like you’ve lost your best friend or the feeling of…”what do I do next”? Did you close the back cover, take a huge deep breath, right from the depths and stare at the book cover again or stare into the distance reflecting on the experience?

I REALLY HOPE SO… and if not then I challenge you to find THAT BOOK!

On finishing an amazing book, there can be sadness and a sense of loss but more importantly, there can be a huge amount of satisfaction from the reading experience. The connections you make, the lives you lead, the places you go, the adventures you have, the people you meet along the way… WOW! All in a book… all in the pages of… a BOOK!
