Samakee Soccer Success!

On Saturday 21st March, the Under 9 boys’ football team traveled to play in their first ever tournament at Bangkok Patana School. This annual event is now one of the biggest International School junior football competitions in Thailand, with 19 teams competing in three leagues: two boys’ and one girls’.

We were in the ‘B’ League and were hoping to benefit from gaining experience of playing 7-a-side on a bigger pitch at Shrewsbury last Monday, where the boys went down to a narrow 3-2 defeat.

Our first game was against Patana Orange (the eventual winners) and a 2-0 loss against their more experienced opponents showed the boys exactly what kind of task lay ahead of them. Managing to swallow their disappointment, the boys came out with determination in their second match against St Andrews ‘B’ and were only denied a deserved victory, following a well-taken goal from Lucas, through a last minute equalizing penalty.

The boys were now getting into their stride and soon raced into a 3-0 lead against their next opponents, Patana Year 3, before a few final minute jitters allowed the home team to pull back two goals. The final whistle brought some relief and a first victory.

The next game was probably our most fiercely contested match of the morning with the boys going down 2-1 to Harrow ‘B’ in spite of a stirring comeback in the final minutes.

So to the last game against Shrewsbury ‘C’, with 3rd place still a possibility – all we needed were a few goals. The team duly obliged, largely helped by an excellent hat-trick from Hann, to win 4-0 and seal the bronze medal on goals scored. In fact, we were the highest scorers in Group ‘B’ with 9 goals.

It had been a great effort from the boys. They just got better and better as the morning went on and will have learned and benefited a great deal from the experience of playing in this excellent tournament.

The whole squad fully played their part in some splendid performances but special mention must go to Lucas, Omri, Taisan, Hann, Jonathan and Alex for great consistency throughout all the games, the latter three doing their bit in goal as well.

On a style note, the boys looked absolutely splendid in their new school kit sponsored by the Hansen family and their company Asian Tigers. Your support is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Squad: Jonathan (captain), Omri, Alex, Lucas, Enzo, Bonus (Year 4); Hann, Taisan (Year 3); Yuval, Benjamin (Year 2).
