Key Stage 1 at St.Andrews Samakee is made up of Year 1 and Year 2 with children aged 5 to 7. As children move into KS1, we build upon the child-centred, play-based approach that is developed in the early years through Enquiry Based Learning (EBL). During EBL sessions, the children will access the curriculum through child-initiated learning. This means that with careful thought and planning, the experiences provided for our children through this approach will encourage them to research, investigate and problem-solve to inform their learning. It will encompass a whole range of subjects including English, Maths, Science, Computing, Geography and History along with others, and allows us to meet the English National Curriculum objectives with the child at the centre.
This approach to learning encourages children to pursue their interests and have rich learning experiences suited to their individual needs and abilities. As a result, children will be inspired and motivated to explore and learn. Emphasis will be placed on the development of skills and capabilities for lifelong learning. Activities and resources will give many opportunities for children to stretch and challenge themselves as well as being there to support children in understanding new concepts and ideas.
